Title: “Why would you walk 500 miles?”
Speakers: Kris Knutson (BA, ‘01; MA, ‘08) and Denis Fortin (MDiv, ‘86)
For over a thousand years Christians from all over Europe have walked the pilgrim trail Camino de Santiago, the Way of St James, from the French side of the Pyrenees Mountains across northern Spain to the town of Santiago de Compostela. It’s a walk of at least 500 miles to the legendary site of the burial of James, the son of Zebedee, disciple of Jesus and the first apostle to die for his faith.
Today, this ancient pilgrim trail has been reborn and thousands of “pilgrims” walk it every year for countless reasons, some for spiritual devotion, others for personal renewal, or simply for a vacation. In 2019, Kris Knutson (BA, ‘01; MA, ‘08) and Denis Fortin (MDiv, ‘86) walked the Camino over a five-week period. They will share their experience and some encounters along the Way — and maybe inspire you to do it too!
If you are an honored class member, you are invited to this elegant banquet commencing the Homecoming weekend celebrations at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23. in the Alumni House Backyard Tent. Greet returning classmates and supporters of Andrews University over plates of Sam’s chicken, mashed potatoes and Andrews’ signature dishes. Members of the Class of 1970 and 1971 will be inducted into the Golden Hearts Club after a roll call by the Alumni Association. Honored Alumni will be presented with the Andrews University Alumni Association Medallion, recognizing their outstanding service to church and community. Also honored at this banquet are those who have partnered with Andrews through generous giving, who will be presented with The Spirit of Philanthropy Award. Please RSVP at alumni.andrews.edu/rsvp to secure your complimentary ticket, as space is limited. Honored class members or by invitation only.
2021 Honored Classes: 1950, 1951, 1960, 1961, 1970, 1971, 1980, 1981, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2020, 2021
STATEMENT OF SHARED RESPONSIBILITY AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF UNIQUE CIRCUMSTANCES
We are living in unique and uncertain times. None of us knows for sure what the future holds, but at Andrews University we know this—we are going to have a full University experience this fall. We are working hard to ensure that whatever shape the curriculum and co-curriculum takes, it will continue to be the excellent, collegial and productive experience that drew you to Andrews University and to all that we all cherish. At this point we have made the decision to provide an on-campus Homecoming experience in as full a way as possible.
We are committed to meeting federal, state and local health guidelines in all we do. Of course, in the current fluid environment, we cannot promise that the situation will not change. If it does, and we are forced to move to more remote delivery of events, we will do so with your safety in mind. Please understand that whether on campus or remote, a few things are certain:
- Andrews University holds as paramount the health, safety and welfare of every member of its community, and we take seriously our responsibility to create an environment where those principles drive our decisions.
- Having said that, none of us can guarantee what shape COVID-19 will take, and none of us—including Andrews University—can guarantee a COVID-19-free environment. Unfortunately, this is simply not feasible and that means that there is an inevitable risk of infection that we voluntarily accept as we work, visit campus and participate in events.
- Taking steps to minimize the risk of COVID-19 infections (or any other spread of disease) at Andrews University is a shared responsibility. Every member of our community—including you— must do their part. This means adhering to national, state and local health guidelines and requirements, as well as adhering to those measures that Andrews University deems safe and appropriate for its campus. Andrews University reserves the right to impose guidelines that exceed the requirements of the various health agencies. Specific details will be provided as circumstances dictate, but this may include such things as requiring temperature checks, social distancing, contact tracing, wearing masks or other facial coverings, using other PPE, not attending events if sick, and isolating and quarantining when required. You agree to do all of this not just for yourself, but for the safety of others, and because this is consistent with the Andrews University Covenant of Care.
- In complete transparency, you understand that if you return to the physical campus of Andrews University, there is a risk you may contract COVID-19. Despite the University’s efforts to comply with all COVID-19 mitigation recommendations, we cannot categorically guarantee this will not happen. You come to campus acknowledging and understanding this possibility.
- Finally, if you are traveling to the campus of the University to celebrate Homecoming, any expenses incurred in advance for travel, lodging and other costs will be your responsibility to handle, not the University’s, should circumstances change and require a remote Homecoming experience for some currently unplanned reason.
For current ongoing statistics about COVID-19 spread at Andrews University, please visit the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard.
